WOUNDED NEEDS

No one is simple. We are all the product of an interaction between our genetic makeup and our experiences. Sometimes we can inherit predispositions to a variety of vulnerable states. Nevertheless, the majority of problems we might face are not due to our genetic makeup alone. In general, our sense of who we are and what we want from the world is governed by both processed and unprocessed memories. They underlie our conscious and unconscious responses. We have a hard enough time understanding ourselves. How are we supposed to understand anyone else? Many times we may need help. There are about 15 different kinds of family therapy and they assist people to understand the different patterns and problems in communication. For most family and couple therapists, there is the belief that if the way people interact with each other can be changed, then the relationships can become healthy and productive. Unfortunately, many times it’s like trying to swim against a current, since the early childhood memories continue to drive unhealthy responses. People may want to change their actions but find themselves locked into patterns that they can’t control. However, as we’ve already seen, understanding where our actions come from can be an important step in learning what we need to do to change.
